“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”  (Psalm 62:8, NIV)

Most of us never give a moment’s thought to the necessity of refuge — until we encounter a force of nature.

When our serene life becomes an angry tempest, we yearn for the safety of the harbor.  When the sunshine disappears behind the darkest clouds, we take cover.  When the air we breathe becomes a gale and uproots the features of our landscape that we thought would never change, we flee to our refuge.

Because, in a figurative sense, all of us have been, will be, or will again be, refugees; we need to remember that not all places of refuge are able with withstand the forces.  The scripture reminds us of this when it tells us not to trust in ourselves; nor in others; nor in wealth or possessions.

In every situation, and “at all times, pour out your hearts to Him.”  God is our refuge!  He is our secure shelter.  – Luther

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”  (Psalm 20:7, NIV)

The “horses” and “chariots” of today are no less alluring than in David’s time.

As disciples of Jesus, the Lord God is not our “last resort”; as in someone we call on when all of our other schemes have failed, and our other means have been exhausted.  On the contrary: The Lord God is our first resource.

In the words of the hymn (“What a Friend we have in Jesus”): “O what peace we often forfeit; o what needless pain we bear.  All because we do not carry; everything to God in prayer.”  – Luther

“When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much.  The important thing is for the Lord to commend them.”  (2 Corinthians 10:18, NLT)

The current fixation on self-promotion isn’t new. Folks were marketing themselves long before Paul wrote today’s admonition against the self-promotion to the Christian disciples in Corinth — which was the New York City of its day: Populous, cosmopolitan, a crossroads of humanity.

I know, I know. . .  We reason that if we’re not for ourselves, then who is?  It is a valid question.

The answer for the disciple of Jesus is that it is God who is our champion.  God opens doors that no one can close; and God closes doors that no one can open.

Be faithful to Him in all things, and he will not only chart the course of your life; but He will ensure that you arrive at all of the correct checkpoints — at the right time.  – Luther
