“Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, ‘Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.’”  (Mark 9:35, NLT)

Jesus doesn’t ignore humanity’s competitive spirit, but He directs it to the channel of service. Few want to go there. Fewer still want to live there; but no where else is leadership — as Jesus defines leadership — to be found.

You will seldom find a queue at the threshold of “service,” but you will always find the company of the risen Christ. Is that enough?  – Luther

“Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.” (Psalm 100:2, KJV)

Is there gladness in your service?

Most of us take note when we’ve been attended to by a waiter in a restaurant, or a clerk in a retail store, who was glad in their service.  When we receive “glad service,” it arrests our attention; it lifts our spirit; it transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.

As you approach your tasks today — working as for the Lord — will you bring gladness to the task?

Will your interaction with others today — serving each as you would Jesus — transform the ordinary into the extraordinary because of your attitude?  – Luther

“‘Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.'” (John 12:26, NIV)

To serve Jesus is to follow Jesus. To follow Jesus is to be with Jesus.

It is not possible to truly serve Jesus without also following Him. If our service consists only of isolated acts — even sacrificial isolated acts — without a commitment to also go where He goes; and to do as He directs; such service is deficient.

To be a true servant of Jesus is to voluntarily subordinate our will to the will of the One being served. This type of service cannot be rendered at a distance. It is intimate. It is persistent.  – Luther
