“I have chosen you.”  (John 15:16a, KJV )

Today, a reminder from Oswald Chambers’ devotional, “My Utmost for His Highest”: “Keep that note of greatness in your creed. It is not that you have got God, but that He has got you.”   – Luther

“Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it. (Ecclesiastes 7:12, NIV)

While many people pursue wealth because of its apparent security, Ecclesiastes reminds us that — compared to wisdom — money is an inferior shelter.

Money cannot add years to our life, but wisdom will give life to our years. Money cannot reveal the secrets of life; but if a persons acquires wisdom, life’s secrets are revealed.

To live according to God’s wisdom is to have all of the things that money cannot buy.  – Luther

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.” (Psalm 4:8, NLT)

We are reminded daily of the perils of our time: Disease, injury, war, pestilence, mayhem, shortages. . .  It is enough to keep you up at night!

Times were just as tough and uncertain in David’s time (and his time was probably a good bit tougher that we have it today). Yet, David — the author of today’s psalm — declares that “in peace I will lie down and sleep.”

David did not derive his peace from his wealth, his military might, his physicians, or his own intelligence.  His confidence was based entirely on God. We do well to do likewise.  – Luther
