“Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.” (Philippians 3:17, NIV)

Every person is a “model.” Some people are examples of what to do; and others are examples of what not to do.

Paul encouraged the disciples in Philippi to follow his own example, and to follow others in the community who live similarly.

Righteous living needs to be encouraged because it often requires making choices that are contrary to the culture; such as, eschewing the love of money, loving our enemies, and being kind to the poor.

If you are discouraged because it seems that you’re alone on the narrow path of righteous living, look around! When you find a fellow-traveler, keep your eyes on him or her, even if from afar. – Luther

“The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish.” (Proverbs 14:11, NIV)

Generally speaking, houses are more secure than tents. However, most of us would choose a tent erected with integrity over a house marked for destruction.

A house (e. g. life) built on deceit, corrupted morals, or other deficiencies — no matter how grand the house may appear to observers — is destined for destruction. It is far better to dwell in a humble tent with the assurance of God’s protection, than in any house of wickedness.

As disciples of Jesus, we must keep an eternal perspective; even as the rest of the world looks only at tomorrow, or at outward appearances. If we forgo the fruits of evil, we shall certainly instead receive the rewards of a clear conscience, a good reputation, and the favor of our heavenly Father. – Luther

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11, NIV)

No pain, no gain.

The book of Hebrews concludes its encouragement to godly discipline by reminding the reader that the practice of discipline — though inconvenient and painful in the moment — produces peace and righteousness in those who persevere in it.

God’s recipe for peace and righteousness confounds “conventional wisdom,” which continuously seeks the “short-cut” or an “edge.”

The question for you and me is whether we will believe God and submit to His discipline in order to apprehend the peace we desire; or will we spend our limited time on this earth trying to prove Him wrong by seeking peace through other means. – Luther
