“I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.” (Psalm 37:25, NIV)

David saw in his history the total faithfulness of God, both to him — and to his offspring.  God is sometimes faithful to us “because of,” and sometimes God is faithful to us “in spite of,” but God is always faithful.

In His faithfulness, He cares for us. He seeks our highest good, even through trial or in tears.  He gives each of us reasons to love Him and to trust Him that are as countless as they are compelling.

Each of us has lived long enough to have made “history” with God.  When you look back on your particular, personal history, what is it you see?  What is your testimony?  – Luther

“’Neither this man nor his parents sinned,’ said Jesus, ‘but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.'” (John 9:3, NIV)

As difficult as it may be to face the fact that God allows his creatures to suffer hardship and pain; it would be infinitely more difficult if it were true that God was indifferent to our hardship and pain.

We may not always know the reason why we or others must suffer; and today’s scripture cautions us against drawing conclusions about the reasons behind suffering. However, we may be confident in knowing that God both cares and is engaged.

The disciple of Jesus has the added benefit of knowing that “all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Do not be discouraged when you encounter hardship or pain — whether in your life of in the life of others. Remain faithful in all that God has given you to do, and you will experience both grace and peace.  – Luther

“Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word of all the good words which the LORD your God spoke concerning you has failed; all have been fulfilled for you, not one of them has failed.” (Joshua 23:14, NASB)

As he neared the end of his life, Joshua spoke those words to the Children of Israel; and reminded them of the Lord’s faithfulness to them and to their ancestors.

The same may be said of us today: Not one of God’s promises has failed — ever!

Look back over the years of your life.  Remember illnesses, failures, difficulties in personal relationships, trials at work, and other dark times. Remember how God delivered you — and others with you. Remember how when deliverance was not His plan for you, He stood with you, even when others had gone.

Therefore, resolve to trust Him in everything.  Hold nothing back. God honors his word; He keeps His promises. He will never leave us or forsake us.  – Luther
