“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” (Psalm 62:8, NIV)

Most of us never give a moment’s thought to the necessity of refuge — until we encounter a force of nature.

When our serene life becomes an angry tempest, we yearn for the safety of the harbor.  When the sunshine disappears behind the darkest clouds, we take cover.  When the air we breathe becomes a gale and uproots the features of our landscape that we thought would never change, we flee to our refuge.

Because, in a figurative sense, all of us have been, will be, or will again be, refugees; we need to remember that not all places of refuge are able with withstand the forces.  The scripture reminds us of this when it tells us not to trust in ourselves; nor in others; nor in wealth or possessions.

In every situation, and “at all times, pour out your hearts to Him.”  God is our refuge!  He is our secure shelter.  – Luther

“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with His hand.” (Psalm 37:23-24, NIV)

God is the Alpha and the Omega.

When God becomes the Alpha and the Omega (the first and last) in our personal lives, He becomes our delight; and every decision we make is made with the firm confidence that He will be our lifeguard.

There are many opportunities for us to become “tripped-up”: Some come as a result of our ignorance; some come as a result of the evil designs of others; some come as a result of our lot as humans; some come through our own disobedience.

In each circumstance, though we have stumbled badly — and are flailing-about to regain our equilibrium — the Lord’s hand arrests our fall.  The Lord’s hand re-establishes balance.

Walk closely with the Lord.  Hold firmly to His hand.  Delight yourself in Him.  – Luther

“’Neither this man nor his parents sinned,’ said Jesus, ‘but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.'” (John 9:3, NIV)

As difficult as it may be to face the fact that God allows his creatures to suffer hardship and pain; it would be infinitely more difficult if it were true that God was indifferent to our hardship and pain.

We may not always know the reason why we or others must suffer; and today’s scripture cautions us against drawing conclusions about the reasons behind suffering. However, we may be confident in knowing that God both cares and is engaged.

The disciple of Jesus has the added benefit of knowing that “all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Do not be discouraged when you encounter hardship or pain — whether in your life of in the life of others. Remain faithful in all that God has given you to do, and you will experience both grace and peace.  – Luther
