Each Morning as I go thru my checklist (I’m a list person) to accomplish I seem to wrestle with “God is in control” and “I should be doing more”. Trust vs Doing is this a sin or just a battle that is drawing me closer to the Lord?
Thank you for the question, John. Each statement (“God is in control,” and “I should be doing more”) by itself is neither a sin or a righteous summons to activity. What is critical is what is behind the words. The statement about God being in control can mean anything from “anything I might do doesn’t matter” to “I have supreme confidence that God will ultimately prevail.” Does the statement, “God is in control,” provoke a spirit of resignation or the fire to continue doing good despite the naysayers or long odds of success?
The same applies to the thought, “I should be doing more.” There are times when we ought to get our hands dirty or apply ourselves more diligently to a task. Having a checklist can be a way to ensure that you are being diligent. However, does the list serve your objective of “working as unto the Lord” or does it serve our sense of being better than others? At its worst, the list can keep you from following the leading of the Holy Spirit if it becomes an excuse to NOT (in the words of Micah the prophet) “do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
Yours is a good question, and many Christians struggle with the dilemma you described. Know that it is a struggle, but faithfully and prayerfully stay in the fight.
