“Who is wise and understanding among you?  Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”  (James 3:13, NIV)

Deeds done in humility are particularly fragrant because the person performing the deed is not doing it to draw attention to herself.  Wisely, she sees a higher purpose and a bigger plan in play.

The greatest deeds, by God’s estimation, are performed in obscurity; the left hand unaware of what the right hand has done.  The greatest deeds provide help to the helpless; hope to the hopeless; and they empower the disenfranchised.

Everyone — regardless of title or status — can live a life of humble service to others and to God.  Make this your ambition.  With wisdom comes humility.  – Luther

REMINDER: Daily Encouragement will be on break tomorrow (Sunday).  It is the first Sunday in Advent, the season of preparation for the coming our King as an infant!  Have a great day in worship, and remember to exhibit mercy and humility in all of your dealings — particularly the difficult ones.  Lord willing, see you on Monday!

“There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord.” (Proverbs 21:30, NIV)

A reality check: God is all-powerful.

By our own estimation, we do so many things well; and we begin to think that that is the end of it.  However, when we take God into account, things change.

Proverbs reminds us that our wisdom is no match for God; our insight is no match for God; and all of our brilliant plans are no match for God.

We do best to follow His wisdom, knowledge, and planning, lest we come to the end of our course and find embarrassment — rather than accolades — as our reward.

Commit all of your days and all of your ways (plans) to the Lord, and He will guard your path.  – Luther

“For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 14:11, NIV)

Humility.

Jesus tells us that we ought not exalt ourselves (e. g., seek time in the spotlight).  In other words, do not covet a status that is higher, larger, or more powerful, for personal benefit or glorification.

Our ego is fed by such things, but in the context of today’s scripture Jesus challenges us to resist the temptation of self-promotion and self-elevation so common in our society.  We should, instead, take our place with the least and the last among us.  In God’s time, truly humble individuals are always recognized with a public promotion that no one can take-back or take away.  – Luther
