“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” (Ephesians 4:1-2, NIV)

Live up to your calling.

This is the message from Paul — writing from prison in Rome — to the Christians in Ephesus (a city in modern-day Turkey).

Our calling is the highest of all callings, yet we are instructed to be humble. Our calling often leads us into the coarsest of situations, yet we are expected to be gentle at all times. Our calling gives us access to the wisdom of the ages, and the knowledge of the Almighty; yet we are also called to exhibit patience, forbearance, and love.

“Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.” (Proverbs 27:2)

As the saying goes: “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.”

Working faithfully while waiting to be acknowledged is, sometimes, very difficult. Self-promotion is nothing new. People have been burnishing their image, publishing their credentials, and boasting about their strengths since the beginning of time.

However, the wisdom of God encourages us to let our praise come from the mouth of others; from the lips of those who have no ulterior motive or hidden interest. A few words of praise from such people is worth more than thousands of words of self-promotion.

Choose the narrow path. It is worth the solitude, the work, and the wait. – Luther

“For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 14:11, NIV)

Humility.

Jesus tells us that we ought not exalt ourselves (e. g., seek time in the spotlight). In other words, do not covet a status that is higher, larger, or more powerful, for personal benefit or glorification.

Our ego is fed by such things, but in the context of today’s scripture Jesus challenges us to resist the temptation of self-promotion and self-elevation so common in our society. We should, instead, take our place with the least and the last among us. In God’s time, truly humble individuals are always recognized with a public promotion that no one can take-back or take away. – Luther
