“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”  (James 1:5, NIV)

Decisions.  Decisions.  Decisions.

Having wisdom makes the burden of making the decisions in our lives much lighter.  The source of wisdom is God, “who gives generously to all.”

The humorist Will Rogers said, “Learn from the mistakes of others; you won’t live long enough to make them all yourself.”  So true.

God’s wisdom is not derived from the collected errors of humanity, but from a perspective that sees all things perfectly.  Invite the wisdom of our heavenly Father into your decisions today.  – Luther

“But the wisdom from above is first of all pure.  It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others.  It is full of mercy and good deeds.  It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.”  (James 3:17, New Living Translation)

In today’s scripture selection, James contrasts earthly wisdom with heavenly wisdom.

Earthly wisdom’s perspective is 70 or 80 years — enough only to cover our time on this earth.  If you think you can outrun to the grave the scales of human justice, what is to prevent you from being contentious, rude, and unyielding in your dealings with others?

On the other hand, heavenly wisdom has an eternal perspective.  It recognizes the reality of spiritual things, and of God’s reckoning.

Resist earth’s Siren call to its ways and to its wisdom.  Other people may scoff at your “naivete,” but only for the short span of their lives.  The approval of God is forever!  – Luther

“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” (Hebrews 12:14, NIV)

Conventional wisdom is not God’s wisdom.

Conventional wisdom says, “Do unto others as others do unto you.”  God’s wisdom says, “Do unto others as YOU would have others do unto you.”

Conventional wisdom is earth-bound.  Follow it, and you’re only as good as the crowd.

Godly wisdom is heaven-bound. Follow it, and you’re as God is good. Live it, and you will not only see as God sees; but you will see God.

To be holy is to be as God is, and begins with seeking reconciliation with everyone – particularly enemies and foes; looking past the outward appearance to the heart; valuing the things of heaven over the things of earth; and redeeming time for eternity. – Luther
