“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.”  (Matthew 7:21, NLT)

When valued against actions, talk is cheap.

Jesus says that it is not just our confession, but it is through our obedience to God’s law that we realize the rule of God.  Furthermore, as we see in the two verses that follow (verses 23 and 24), it is not our successes that impress our heavenly Father; it is our faithfulness.

How different is that from what we see daily: Where good words are often divorced from good deeds?  Give God the lead today — and faithfully follow!  – Luther

“Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you.  Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”  (Hebrews 13:7, NIV)

Today’s scripture is today’s challenge for us!

Can you remember your former Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teachers; or your small group bible discussion leaders; or a former pastor, or anyone else to whom you looked-up who “spoke the word of God to you”?

Will you consider the outcome of their lifestyle of prayer, study, service to others, and faithful obedience?

Are you willing to accept the challenge of imitating their faith in God?

There is great encouragement (and strength) for us today in the histories of God’s faithful ones.  – Luther

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22, NIV)

Information. Inspiration. Perspiration.

Information is knowledge. God presents every person with the information that leads to life and peace.

Inspiration is the desire to act on that information. It is the bright light of revelation. It is the “I get it” moment. The devil attacks at the moment of inspiration to delay or to detour our engagement.  These sidetracks (often very rational, convenient, and well-reasoned) are effective because they keep us on the sidelines or altogether away from God’s work and, thereby, damping the ardor of the Spirit at work within us.

Perspiration is the work of taking information — fueled by inspiration — to reality. Information and inspiration without perspiration is akin to having a construction blueprint and all building materials at hand, but never breaking ground. Nothing of either temporal or eternal value is established or sustained without perspiration.

Get informed. Get motivated. Get to work.  – Luther
